The Three Most Expensive Words in Business Ownership “I’ll Never Sell.”

This is a common statement we hear from business owners is:

“I’ll never sell my business.”

It’s usually said with a lot of conviction. Sometimes even with pride.

What’s interesting is that after speaking with hundreds of business owners over the years, we’ve found that this view is rarely based on a carefully considered long-term plan.

More often, it’s an emotional response shaped by assumptions about the future.

The reality is that most business owners will eventually exit their business in some form. The question isn’t usually if they will leave the business one day, but how and when.

So why do so many owners believe they’ll never sell?

In our experience, there are several recurring themes.

Many owners simply can’t imagine life beyond the business.

After spending years or decades building it, the business becomes part of their identity. Others assume they’ll always have the same energy, passion and motivation they have today, without considering how priorities can change over time.

Some are convinced their children will eventually take over.

Despite the fact that many next-generation family members have different ambitions, careers or lifestyles in mind. Others subconsciously view selling as “giving up” rather than recognising it as a successful outcome of years of hard work.

Some owners become so focused on running the business that they never stop to view it as an asset.

They spend years managing staff, customers, stock, cashflow and operations, but rarely ask themselves a simple question:

“What would someone pay for this business if I decided to sell tomorrow?”

The common thread is that these beliefs are often emotional rather than practical. They are assumptions about a future that hasn’t happened yet.

Then life gets in the way. Retirement arrives. Health changes. Family circumstances evolve. Interests shift. Opportunities emerge.

Suddenly, a business sale that was never part of the plan becomes a very real consideration.

The most successful business owners don’t necessarily prepare because they want to sell. They prepare because they understand that keeping their options open creates flexibility and value.

Ask yourself:

  • Could my business operate successfully without me?
  • Do I know what the business is currently worth?
  • Am I building a business or creating a job for myself?
  • If circumstances changed unexpectedly, would I be ready?

At NZ Business Brokers, we regularly have conversations with owners who once said they would never sell.

Those discussions have taught us that planning for an eventual exit isn’t about wanting to leave it’s about building a stronger, more valuable business and giving yourself choices for the future.

Every business owner will one day exit their business. The best outcomes usually belong to those who planned long before they thought they needed to.
